Fishing for Panfish is a blast, we all know that. Setting up a couple of tip ups while out scouting for Bluegills, Crappie, Perch or other panfish is also another way to have some fun. However, if you really want a rush, try spearing. Yes, spearing through the ice is a blast.

While getting set up for spearing may cost a couple of more dollars than a inexpensive combo and a couple of ice jigs, it’s well worth the time and money. Some of the equipment you’ll need, you may already have. You’ll need some type of shanty with a large opening, a pull over type shanty works well for spearing. The next thing you’ll need is a spear, decoys and an ice saw.

All of these items can usually be found at your local sporting goods store. Also, don’t forget to check local rules and regulations before hitting the ice to spear your favorite game fish. Some of the rules may vary from lake to lake, and state to state. Check with your local sporting goods retailer on lakes near you that hold good quality Northern Pike and are legal to spear. They’ll also fill you in on specific details on how to get started.

So if you want to try something new and expand your ice season, give spearing a try. Check out this YouTube video:
